Excellent commentary: "From Madison to DC, capitalists tighten grip"
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — This country is a mess: Twenty million people can’t find a decent job. Twenty million live in a home that’s worth less than what they owe on it. Forty-three million can’t afford to eat without handouts from the government. Health care is increasingly expensive and humiliating. Retirement is out of reach. Our bridges and roads are crumbling. Our children aren’t learning.

But there’s one group that’s doing just fine: the capitalists, you know, the people who own just about everything, the people we work for, shop for, die for.

Things look pretty good from where they sit, which is on a mountain of cash. The stock market is way up. Profits are soaring. Their incomes and wealth took a hit from the Great Recession, but they’ve weathered the storm pretty well.

Best of all, the capitalists — and the corporations they own and run — have captured our governments, and are bending our public institutions to their will.

This comes from Rex Nutting, MarketWatch's Washington bureau chief. And while MarketWatch is now owned by News Corp., Rex has always been fair in his reporting and commentary. I guess he's now taking it a bit further.

1. Thank you for posting this most excellent commentary. REC.

"Corporations don’t just want to be free from regulations; they also want to profit by taking over the provision of public services."

Not something we'll ever hear about from our Democratic leadership though. Why is that? Why are they silent about the ultimate goals of this unabashed attempt to destroy the American way of life?

9. I think the Right would say
this is just a return to the American way of life, as intended by the Founding Fathers, after an unprecedented expansion of government.

How'd I do at channeling Rush Limbaugh?

3. "our children aren't learning"
Actually, the capitalists have been trying to spread that message. That's one of their primary ways to bash teachers.

"Our children" are learning about as well as they ever did.

6. I think in this context, that line can be read a number of ways.
Sure, it could be yet another dig at our test scores vs. the rest of the world. But given what he's saying, it might also be a subtle shot at for-profit charter school companies, the elimination of important education programs like music and art, or what's going on in places like Texas with the text book mess.

4. This guy would have his cake and eat it too.

What other kind of behavior would one expect from capitalists? Given the picture he paints how can he expect there to be any correction of the situation when they hold all the power? What's he wanna do, ask them to be nice?
