"the war situation...
...has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage..." (Imperial rescript 15 August 1945).

The Emperor DOES NOT make public pronouncements. If he ever does they are understated. The Emperor made a pronouncement tonight and that is huge.

3. This

It is now a matter of national honor and while the tradition has been mostly discouraged this is one of those cases I would not be shocked to hear a PM or the head of TEPCO or a few others receive these things from the Emperor

so watch for reports of people dying in the next year or so...

If they don't want to, a bullet will work too.

The set of a wakisashi and a katana is called a daisho

9. Nope, these days they just apologize...
if they are forced to resign then that's what happens, but more than likely it'll result in some very similar American shenanigans which has been going on for awhile.

My husband has traveled over there extensively dealing with manufacturing/plant safety issues and they are involved with as much cover-up and ass-kissing as any other corporate entity.

11. Every week in the news there you hear of people who have failed who kill themselves.

It is still a strong tradition. This country has lost the ability to appreciate the force of shame and the true weight of responsibility.

They haven't.

12. Yes, suicide is an epidemic in Japan...
but I thought we the discussion was about those who are in charge of the power plant and the disaster response. If not, my apologies for misunderstanding. TEPCO's previous "apologies" are easily found via a google search.

13. It isn't an "epidemic" it is a core belief in their morality
It isn't possible to predict, but the speculation is very, very realistic.
