Oh, my. "Radioactivity forecast system down"
A computer system that forecasts the spread of radioactivity has not been working due to malfunctioning monitoring posts around a troubled nuclear power plant in quake-hit Fukushima Prefecture.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says it does not know when the system will be back in operation.

The system, called SPEEDI, predicts how radioactive substances will spread in case of radiation leakage from nuclear power plants, based on measurements taken at various locations, prevailing winds and other weather conditions.

SPEEDI data are intended to be used to draw up evacuation plans for residents around power plants in case of accidents.

2. Under the best of situations, monitoring radioactivity is an EXTREMELY difficult art....
With the tsunami and TEPCO's world famous secrecy, it will be impossible.

The TEPCO pressers are a cruel joke.

3. Strange that...
Same thing happened to the monitoring system here at the Bayer MIC plant after it blew up.

4. Sattelites
There have to be some space craft that can pick out the radiation clouds.

There are sats that can read humidity, ... DoD surely is capable of reading radiation?

5. DOD has a network of sats to detect nuclear detonations via gamma emissions
Not sure how sensitive it is for lower exposures. I mean it was designed to detect covert nuclear testing (even underground).

6. Can you email them and ask for pics?
I can't. They don't trust me. Do they trust you?

7. Yes but not about that.

At least I would hope a clearance means they trust me. :)

I am not sure how useful the network would be for this type of event anyways. It was primarily designed to detect nuclear detonations which have a significantly larger signature.

8. Good
Do us all a favor and let us know what they say.

Heck, we are kinda like the owners of the sats, right? Why shouldn't they tell you the truth?

9. If we can't even MONITOR radiation in the midst of a nuclear disaster....
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 09:37 AM by jtrockville
Maybe we shouldn't be advocating more of this dangerous, expensive technology.

10. Oh, we can
But they don't seem to want to tell us what they've found.
Might scare us.

Still, we have an intrepid DUer on the case and statistically speaking there is an outside chance we may get some of that information.

12. So "they" can monitor, but we can't know. Sure sounds safe to me.

13. They might actually tell us
After we've had a dose.

See above that the DoE is in Japan. I bet you their Emperor is a bit uneasy with that.
