4. That is their whole goal.
They don't necessarily mind paying taxes (when was the last time you heard a bagger complaining about sales tax or local option income taxes).

They don't want to pay federal taxes because, in their minds, they can't control that spending enough.

They figure if the mayor wastes money on stuff they disagree with, they can vote him our much easier than replacing the entire federal government.

5. They do complain about local taxes.
You have to find a local race or competition in which tea-party status matters or actually talk to tea-partiers. In national races and when discussing national issues there's no real point in injecting local tax discussions.

However, the point about wanting more say over your taxes so that they're spent on things you think important and not on things you think wrong cuts both ways. Look at the attitudes a lot of DUers have towards military, intelligence, Education/NCLB spending. They like the idea of spending--esp. if it's the result of progressive taxation and they're not in the higher tax brackets--but really want to be able to control where it goes.

I've even seen long-standing (and non-troll) DUers complain about private funding going to things they don't think are necessary, things they think are wrong or misguided that compete with the "good" initiatives done by government, or which use funds that the government could use for better things. In other words--and this is a paraphrase, not just an inference about their views--they want to be able to control what private foundations and NGOs do with their money.

6. Actually, it is important with regard to teabaggers...
...because from what I could gather back during the "town hall protest" phase, their outrage over tax increases was (partly) due to wrapping of all their taxes, federal, state, and local, so even though fed taxes went down their total tax load went up. And FOX and the astroturf league pointed that anger at Obama.

Maybe it's pointless to interject local issues, but it's worthwhile to pry local issues like this away from national discussions.
