Ken & Barbie Update Their Status
?t=1297717404&s=12
http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2011/02/14/133755803/ken-and-barbie-update-their-status

Ken is stepping out of Barbie's digital media shadow to gear up for his 50th birthday. He's not just a hunky, plastic beach bum — he's a hunky, plastic beach bum who knows how to navigate the Web.

Ken Carson — his full name — is tweeting, updating his Facebook page and occasionally using Foursquare to check in to places he loves to go with Barbie. This is all a part of Mattel's marketing campaign to beef up sales of Barbie's lesser half.

The toy manufacturer is using the power of the Web and social media to keep Ken "cool" in the digital age.

Retail analyst Howard Davidowitz says it's working: "When you have a top brand, because there's so many private labels, so many knockoffs, the name of the game is to create buzz about your product. Nothing does that better than social media — nothing."

It may be news to you, but Ken and Barbie were "just friends" for seven years. Part of Mattel's marketing campaign involved getting the public to vote online or text whether Barbie should take Ken back in time for Valentine's Day.

In conjunction with the texting, online voting, Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, Mattel also launched a reality show on Hulu — the video site — where eight guys compete to be the best real-life Ken.

1. This just in: Barbie/Ken Marriage Annulled - Non-Consummation.
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 09:40 AM by MineralMan
Neither party, apparently, was able to physically perform the reproductive act, making their marriage null and void.

4. Negative. I've made Ken and Barbie perform some erotic acts, despite the smooth bits. /nt

7. The law is very specific regarding consummation.
Very specific. Neither Ken nor Barbie are capable of performing the necessary act. Annulment granted! Next case!

9. I won't discuss the complex relationship my Ann Coulter and
Jesse Ventura action figures engage in. It's all just too embarrassing to describe. The things I've found them doing on the bookshelf where they live, though, are quit shocking. I'm afraid to have guests in my home because of it. The shame...the shame...

3. Ken has a last name?
I wonder if Barbie does too? My daughter used to call hers Barbie Zimmerman when she was about 3 years old. I have no clue why Zimmerman.

16. Hey Rabblevox - I was responding to the "Zimmerman" post and pushed the
wrong button...I totally agree, though, "last name, no genitalia" is sad a deal, indeed!

17. To any San Francisco residents...what was the name...
of the store near Market and Castro that had "gay Ken and GI Joe" dioramas in the window? I seem to remember it was "Uncle"...something, but that could just be my middle-aged memory playing tricks.

13. That is adorable. I'd ask your daughter if she remembers naming her Barbie "Zimmerman" and why >
she might get a kick out of it.

6. Ken left barbie for a domestic partnership with....
GI JOE. They are both Eunuchs, enjoy styling their plastic hair, they take long walks on the beach and they never talk politics. Ken is liberal, Joe is a Tea Partier but when you don't have any junk...you gotta take what you can get.
