SAN BRUNO, Calif. — School districts in California have issued nearly 19,000 layoff notices so far to teachers amid uncertainty over the state budget, the California Teachers Association estimated Tuesday.

The union announced its estimate of preliminary notices on the day school districts must let employees know they could lose their jobs.

Some districts had yet to fully report how many warnings had been distributed as they prepare for worst-case budget scenarios. The union said it expects to have a final count Friday.

Its early estimate includes almost 500 school employees in San Francisco, 540 in Oakland, nearly 900 in San Diego, and about 5,000 educators in Los Angeles.

2. And if/when California voters reject the extended tax increases...
...as I suspect they will do? What then? The cuts are going to be draconian.

Brown has been trying to make the tax extension bi-partisan but the Republicans are going to force it to go to the ballot without any support, and the anti-tax groups are going to have an advertising field day.

If CA voters kill the tax increase extension, the budget cuts are going to make Wisconsin look like child's play.

5. The problem is the taxes are regressive
Fees for everything you buy. Huge fees, vehicle registration fees, park fees. Why don't they increase property and high income taxes? Us people scrapping by cannot not afford them.

6. Prop 13 blocks increases in property taxes and Prop 4 is a top limit on governments spending
High incomes are structured to avoid taxation under the current tax code.
