2. The bond vigilante is even more effective than the NRA
Every now and then, the NRA actually has to do something to frighten off politicians contemplating the meaning of a "well-regulated militia." Just the notion of the bond vigilante is enough to keep elected officials from enacting reasonable financial reform measures; heck, they even invent anticipated objections to avoid upsetting the delicate flowers who constitute the bond trading community.
