Americans United Criticizes Divisive Congressional Resolution Promoting Display of ‘In God We Trust’
SOURCE: Americans United
Press Release
March 16, 2011

Congressional action on a resolution promoting display of “In God We Trust” in public schools and other public buildings is divisive and a diversion from pressing national concerns, according to Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

The House Committee on the Judiciary is scheduled to vote March 17 on H. Con. Res. 13, a measure “reaffirming” In God We Trust as the national motto and encouraging its display in all public buildings, including public schools.
...

Lynn said the real reason for the resolution, introduced by Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), is to curry favor with Religious Right leaders who are increasingly anxious for their Republican allies in the House to act on social issues.

4. Americans United is well aware of the First Amendment...
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 02:11 PM by Adsos Letter
it's the legal base for much of their advocacy/watchdog efforts.

AU suggested that the nation return to E Pluribus Unum as the national motto, as was the case before the 1950's.

12. Yeah, that's what I was thinking of
I have been a member of AU for years now. Just have several things I am trying to get done today while I pay attention to the net.

What can I say, I'm just not as good at multitasking as I use to be. :hide:

10. No problemo; Citizens United often registers the same in people's minds
definitely not the same, though. :)

13. You're right, there are just so many of these groups
these days that sound alike. I'm still waiting for "Americans for Mom, Apple Pie, and 57 Chevy's" to come along.

8. Good for Americans United
What is wrong with the original national motto E pluribus unim - out of many one? It is certainly more appropriate.

15. What about those families who don't share your belief in God and teach their children something
other than God as a belief system? Also, which God are Republicons referring to? If they are all telling the truth, most of them say they are Christian, so would everyone have to trust in your Christian God? Although I don't believe a word of the Republicon propaganda, including their alleged belief in God and (this nation being a Christian nation?) I do believe they have a plan to mesh government and religion, even though the constitution extols the separation of church and state, because if they can further divide this nation and further rig all the systems, they can further enrich themselves, keep their power positions, do the bidding of the corporations and get the support and vote from the religious fanatics. I don't need an alleged god to allegedly tell me right from wrong, I know right from wrong and good from bad. I also know what evil looks like and it looks very much like FOX GOP Fraudcasting, almost every Republicon politician, Limbaugh, Beck, Palin, Bachmann, Gingrinch, Hannity, Demint, Boner, Can'tor et al. Their alleged God, seems to be a hateful, vengeful, one-sided God. So why would I want to trust in their God? And why should my children be forced to trust a god that allegedly supports the agenda of The Republicon party, who lie, cheat, manipulate and help the rich and powerful and themselves, to the detriment of the poor, middle class and needy. They say they have God on their side, If this is the God they say is on their side, I don't want this God anywhere near me or my family, and I certainly don't want it forced on my children in school.
Lou

20. Atheists have to pay taxes, too.
We should have a national motto which doesn't exclude atheists.

21. "E Pluribus Unum" "Out of Many, One." That was it until the 1950's.
Sounds perfectly reasonable.
