Bag of oregano results in suspensions
Bag of oregano results in suspensions

CHESAPEAKE, Va., March 16 (UPI) -- A Virginia father said he was outraged his son was suspended for possessing a plastic bag of oregano at his middle school.

Patrick Grass said his son, Adam, was suspended Thursday from Hickory Middle School in Chesapeake and recommended for expulsion after he was spotted passing the spice to another student, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported Tuesday.

Grass said his son did not bring the baggie to school, instead he was simply asked by another student to pass it along to its owner.

The bag of oregano, which resembled marijuana, was labeled an "imitation controlled substance" by the school and four students were suspended.

1. "simply asked by another student to pass it along to its owner"
Yeah, I believe that. I've never heard a child use this explanation before :silly:

3. This is news worthy of an international dicussion board?
Maybe DU could open a new forum for this type of news? I have a post for the new forum. Little Jimmy Finkelstein over on tenth street was caught using a fake ID to buy beer last weekend. Jimmy told the police that he found the ID and just wanted to see if it would work one time.

Cheers!

5. Where have you been?
shit this is de rigueur for this place and it's always been that way.

The general consensus seems to be, if you can read the subject heading, click on said subject heading it and find out that the message actually equals what the subject heading said than it's your own damned fault if this message pisses you off for not meeting what you may think are your exacting standards.

10. Yes, because I use oregano a lot in cooking
and now I will know to store it in the bathroom where it can be rapidly flushed when the PTA SWAT team starts busting down the door.

We're going to drive our kids nutty with this sort of thing. Especially when they look from news covering revolutions, nuclear accidents, quakes and other natural disasters that kill tens of thousands at a time, and then their daily reality is the Extreme Threat of Oregano to the Purity of Our Youth.

Cognitive dissonance.

4. DAMN THE MAN....man
I don't know how many bags of "oregano" I've brought to school.

The kid deserves to be suspended for awhile for being a smartass and carrying around a bag of oregano but I think expulsion is a little extreme.

Maybe he could serve an in-school suspension making pasta sauce for lunch?

7. It is wonderful to know...
...that our innocent children are being protected from the gateway drug oregano.

Just wait until these people realize that tomatoes and peppers contain nicotine. You'll get expelled for eating pizza at school.

13. Years ago I belonged to a co-op and bought spices in bulk. I would send
1/2 to my mom through the mail. We would joke about one day getting busted. I guess we weren't too far off.:eyes:

14. The kid got caught holding on what LOOKED like an illegal substance.
Given the average intelligence level of most school administrators, I'm surprised they didn't use the "Chicago method" of interrogation and beat a confession out of that kid...

Having said that, I have to ask--there have been a few on here joking about buying a bag of Oregano thinking it was pot. If you savvy pot smokers were fooled by it, how is some schlub of an administrator supposed to know the difference at first glance/whiff? They probably called the cops and THAT makes it an event that must be "addressed" in some way.

Even IF pot was not an illegal substance, I doubt highly it would be allowed in a middle school. That administrator can't tell the difference, and he followed a policy that the district has in place. He's an idiot, and his ignorance has probably hurt that kid way more than it should have--but I really think the main source of blame here probably needs to be the rampant paranoia our society has for pot.

YMMV.
