started barking their heads off just before it struck. We thought a coyote was near them at first.

2. I've heard that the Chinese surrounded themselves with crickets because when
the chirping stopped that was a sign a quake was coming.

Here in Seattle (probably elsewhere, too) I've witnessed it becoming very still and quiet right before a jolt, we call it 'earthquake weather'.

It makes sense that Sophie and other animals are probably more sensitive to the changes preceding a quake. Although I watched a cat of mine sleep through one. :7

4. I believe animals and insects can sense certain electromagnetic anomalies which...
...alert them that something is environmentally "wrong".

As a visual aid I'd like to to view these "earthquake lights" which I believe are rooted in science & geology (as to their cause before an earthquake) but about which so little is known is thought of as something supernatural or mystical.

If this interests you there are some very interesting sites covering "earthquake lights" and what might be causing them.

8. Yes - I've heard of those! How interesting! I'm pretty much of the belief that what
we don't understand scientifically is often attributed to the supernatural. Hell, the thought of our existing at all is pretty mystical when you think about it, and since nobody can really give an explanation to HOW life started, I don't doubt that the earthquake lights have an explanation that someday we will understand.

I'll look into them -- thanks!!

7. Here is local USGS Earth Quake Map for Humboldt Bay region.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/FaultMaps/124-41.html

Note within the last hour there was a 2.1 quake. The map is updated in real time.

I have this link bookmarked and check at near weekly.

The ocean area off Petrolia (a 6.2 within the last year)is very active but has been extremely quiet the past 2 weeks).

An early nuclear plant (that has been closed) was located in the multi-fault zone of southern Humboldt Bay.

10. Sometimes there are good animal behavior precursors
to an earthquake, and sometimes not.

Several decades ago the Chinese decided to pay attention to the animal behavior and use it to predict earthquakes. In February, 1975 they believed an earthquake was imminent in Haicheng, China, and basically ordered everyone in the city to get outdoors. It worked. When the 7.3 quake struck on February 4, there was plenty of property damage, but very little loss of life.

That was the ONLY time an earthquake has been successfully predicted.

About a year and a half later, in July, 1976, a 7.8 earthquake struck Tangshen, China and at least 250,000 people died.

There are many, no doubt accurate, reports of animals behaving strangely shortly before an earthquake, but unfortunately that behavior is often only minutes before the actual earth tremor.

To geyser activity here in Northern Calif.

When Gracie the Siamese kitty was still till alive back in summer of 2006, there was one afternoon where she drove us nuts all day long by going inside for ten minutes, and then outside, and then back inside.

She just wouldn't stop it.

I was ready to throttle her. But when the quake hit late that afternoon, I realized she had been trying to warn us. She was back to her normal self once the quake was over.
