Multicultural Gala Night 2011 in Calgary this Sunday
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Nenshi+guest+honour+Multicultural+Gala+Night/4454698/story.html

Mayor Naheed Nenshi will be guest of honour at this year's Multicultural Gala Night 2011, on Sunday at 6 p.m., hosted jointly by the India Canada Association of Calgary, the southern Alberta Heritage Language Association and the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts.

"This is a unique function embodying multiculturalism in the real sense of the word as the celebrated artistes from various ethnic groups in Calgary get together, to showcase their cultural ballast of many parts of the world with great finesse, expertise and pride," says Senan Mathummal of the 2011 organizing committee.

"The program genuinely focuses on multiculturalism adopted by the Constitution of Canada in order to bring people of different backgrounds together with respect and harmony.

As the intent of the organizing committee is to welcome more people to attend the function, the ticket price has been reduced to $5 per person. Children five and under are free.

Nenshi was born in Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Calgary, Alberta. His parents, Noorjah and Kurban, were South-Asian-origin immigrants to Canada from Tanzania, and he has a sister.

Nenshi became the first Muslim to become mayor of a major Canadian city.

His win was viewed as a breakthrough for the use of social media as an election tool, and when considered with his faith and background, made international headlines. Eastern Canada was particularly surprised given Calgary's conservative image.
