Thank YOU Anonymous! And thank YOU Rep. Hank Johnson!
This scandal cries out for an investigation. I’ll do it by myself if I have to.”The statement above was made on Wednesday, Mar 16th by Rep. Hank Johnson to The House Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities.
Yes, it does cry out for investigation. It is these kind of deceptive, cheating, lying tactics that are totally undermining this democracy.
Congress Asks to Review DoD and NSA Contracts With HBGaryAll three companies were recently in the crosshairs after e-mails stolen from HBGary Federal revealed that the company had been working on a proposal for the law firm Hunton and Williams to investigate and discredit WikiLeaks. The proposal included such maneuvers as launching cyber attacks against WikiLeaks’ servers in order to obtain data on the sources who submit documents to the organization; submitting fake documents to the secret-spilling site and then later calling public attention to the fake documents to raise questions about WikiLeaks’ reliability; and using intimidation tactics against a Salon reporter who avidly supports the group.
The plan was exposed after members of the online vigilante group Anonymous breached the company’s network and stole more than 60,000 internal e-mails.
Rep. Johnson questioned Dr. James Miller who is the deputy under secretary of defense for policy. He asked him what kind of services
HBGary, Palantir Technologies and Berico Technologies were providing for the DOD.
Miller replied that he would have to check with the DOD to see if
"the provision of that type of information is allowed contractually.”Looks like they weren't planning on sharing the information on those contracts with Congress. Why? Because what they really were was the intention to use psyops on the American people, which is totally illegal:
When Johnson asked whether this meant the contracts might have provisions barring them from being shared with Congress, Miller backtracked and said no, that it would take time to determine all the agencies in the department that have contracts with the companies and decide in what form to provide the information.
Briefly for anyone who was not aware of this story, it started when HBGary Federal claimed in the news media that it had worked with the FBI to out Anonymous activists who were behind the denial-of-service attacks against PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and Amazon. Anonymous organized the mass attacks after the companies suspended accounts used by WikiLeaks to receive donations and host documents.
When Anonymous discovered the HBGary plan to out them, they got a little angry. So, they went to work to uncover HBGary Federal’s investigation of its members and they hacked the company.
They discovered far more than they had expected when they obtained access to tens of thousands of emails. And in those emails the plot against Wikileaks was revealed.
Anonymous loves Wikileaks. So naturally they exposed the whole plot, which also involved possibly doing something about people like Glenn Greenwald and others who questioned the smear campaign against Wikileaks.
You can read about it here
Anonymous Hacks Security Firm Investigating It; Releases E-mailWikileaks wasn't going to be the only target of HBGary. They may have been planning to target critics of The Chamber of Commerce also.
We'll see where this goes. The revelations show that the DOD itself was involved, so it might be difficult extracting information from them.
Anyone plotting to deceive the American people this way deserves what happened to HBGary but it is not enough, there have to be prosecutions and I hope there will be.
Meantime, anyone else planning to lie and smear good people for political purposes should think about as they may, like HBGary eg, see this on their websites and their emails all over the internet also.
I love Anonymous!
