Ministry of Truth: 66 y/o woman was 5 in 1945
A Japanese woman who got radiation poisoning in the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945 says she isn't scared by reports of a meltdown at a crippled nuclear plant.

Kazuko Yamashita, 66, was just 5 years old when the A-Bomb dropped by the U.S. military demolished her home and everything around it.

She developed diabetes, thyroid problems and osteoporosis, but isn't panicked about the radiation leaks from the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant.

"I may be a bit too callous about this due to the fact that I was really heavily exposed to radiation, but I don't think this is anything to turn pale over," she told Reuters.

1. Wow, now that's a perspective, I guess...
And, yes, fact checking seems to have gone the way of..... investigative reporters, editors, and unbiased media.

5. No, she would be 71 if born in 1940 (5yrs before a-bomb); if she was *born* in 1945, she'd be 66

6. If she was 5 in 1945, she'd have been born in 1940, correct?
and would be 70/71.

7. Yes that's pretty sloppy reporting. They must have gotten confused by the original
Reuters story, which said:

"Kazuko Yamashita was five when the atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, destroying her home in a second and leaving her with a lifelong fear that every time she becomes ill, this time it is finally cancer.

Now, 66 years later, she wears a dark pink sweater, her dyed hair in a neat bob, and waits out Japan's current nuclear crisis..."

9. Math skilz don't seem to be a strong point at the DailyNews - see this story about the potential for
a bad quake in NYC:

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/03/17/2011-03-17_could_an_earthquake_hit_new_york_city_history_says_yes_but_probably_not_like_jap.html

"A 5.2-magnitude quake shook New York City in 1737 and another of the same severity hit in 1884" ""Will there be one in my lifetime or your lifetime? I don't know. But this is the longest period we've gone without one."

Uhh, Hellooo - the last two were 154 years apart, and now it's only been 127 years since the most recent one!

Made me think of the old Tom Paxton song, "Daily News". Listen here for free: http://new.music.yahoo.com/tom-paxton/tracks/daily-news--37336190

when WWII ended.

The story must be mis-translated.

18. 71 she is
I know Japanese lady who's 72. She remembers bombers flying overhead in the last days of the war and didn't see a westerner until she was in her 20s. Now she's an American.

19. Typical sloppy reporting from the NY Daily News
They screw facts up all the time like this.

The bombing was 66-years ago.

She was 5-years old at the time.

Which would make her 71 now, or going on 71 since the bombing took place in August.
