1. 20 to 30 foot drifts in open areas
They can't tunnel under a drift that tall.

3. They don't have rotaries here, plus
switches clog and freeze, signals systems fail, and everything related to making up and breaking up trains is generally slowed by deep snow. Nice pics, though.

6. Working as an archivist at a railroad museum I have seen a lot of
pictures of trains in the snow but many of them were trains that got stuck in deep snow. Depends on how deep it is.

7. Train tracks should have tunnels over them. That would keep out the snow.

8. Much of the East Coast area is electrified.
This can create a lot more problems, especially with newer electrical equipment that has a lot more "advanced" electronic components.

9. Mush, if not most of east coast rails are old and in very poor condition...
they do get cleaned off eventually, but not till after delays...we get huge drifts and havce few places to put the snow when it is removed. mark
