Libya Propaganda (just an interesting bit whether you're for or against current action).
I saw Richard Engel being asked how well Qaddafi's propaganda is working.

He said that it is unrelenting - all day, all night. Even when he goes to bed, they hear it because there are big screens set up in Green Square (I think that's the name of it) broadcasting the same message over and over -- like Big Brother. He said even for him, after a while it becomes embedded in your consciousness.

Scary.

It's amazing (again, regardless of your stance of the current action) that these people who have had his messages hammering away at them for most of their lives are even able to THINK of revolt!

I think they deserve our respect.

If somebody already posted about this let me know and I'll delete.

1. Hadn't heard about that. Got pics of the big screens anywhere?

3. No - but I haven't looked. I'm trying to remember where I saw/heard
him being interviewed. Maybe on David Gregory? I'll see if I can find pics, but I never seem to have much luck tracking down stuff. I'll substitute the iconic Apple commercial if I can't come up with anything else -- think anyone will notice? :7

2. Just keep hammering the propaganda home. You know, kinda like Pox Noise.
Same basic principle in operation.

4. Yeah, they probably don't even realize they're hearing it any more,
it's just become part of their brain. :scared:

6. I have heard that military bases have Fox on a lot
Airports are getting bad too - it can be hard to find a place to sit without a TV screen showing corporate newscasts.

12. And limbaugh's on Armed Forces Radio, unfortunately.
I always complain, politely, if there's a way to do so. I got Pox Noise turned off at our neighborhood bank. Now they have it on CNBC all the time. But at least it's not Pox.

5. It is not like we have a giant TV in Times Square broadcasting corporate propaganda
But when he does it, then it is propaganda. When corporation do it on orders of magnitude larger scale, than it is advertising.

9. "But when he does it, then it is propaganda."
You would be OK with big billboards blasting "Barack is beautiful"?

Or is endorsing propaganda OK as long as Ghaddafi does it?

11. We should have our house in order before bemoaning other people
It can't be egregious when Qaddafi does it, but acceptable when we do the exact same thing.

13. You are right
I heard Engel say this and I chuckled. American reporters, including Engel, are mostly obsequious corporate lapdogs so it is the pot calling the kettle black. Just take a look at the run up to the Iraq War.

14. I think Engel's an exception. He's lived over there for years and understands
the situations as none of us ever will.
