NHKWorld TV - updates on Fukushima reactors
5-6 power connected

1-2 power connected - various electrical systems will be tested soon

3-4 to be connected on Tuesday

3-4 were doused with water Monday morning. Smoke came from 3 at 4 pm for 2 hours. Smoke came from 2 at 6:20 pm and work was stopped. A 2nd dousing was canceled.

On Tuesday (now, in Japan), work has resumed on the cooling functions.

----------------------

Seems that 5-6 have few remaining issues at this time. They will test low power electric systems on 2 next, while connecting power to 3-4.

1. Those aren't very informative updates.
Just because power is connected doesn't mean there are no, or even few, remaining issues.

4. Reuters blog
I highly recommend it.

At this point posting anything here is like attracting moths to light

Why I will reduce posting to the energy forum. Not worth it any longer...

8. I keep seeing different articles seemingly claiming different things.
I've just about given up on understanding what's really going on. I will check out that blog. Thanks.

5. There is no real change from last week that I can see
Edited on Mon Mar-21-11 04:25 PM by Jersey Devil
The media keeps stating that the condition may be "stabilized", but based on what?

There is still no cooling system working on at least 4 reactors and they are still dumping water in them (though no one really knows if they are hitting the targets, the holding tanks for spent fuel), and on the active reactors no word at all about getting cooling water into the inner vessels. Meanwhile, another reactor (#2) is now smoking. So how is that "stabilized"?

9. Business Insider: What About The Plutonium MOX?
Key points from article:

MOX is two million times more deadly than normal enriched uranium.

Plutonium is extremely difficult to detect because it emits limited gamma rays -- unlike radioactive iodine, caesium and uranium -- and it is deadly;

Plutonium release would not show up as a radiation spike;

Plutonium 239 is the deadliest element known to man;
