2. I wonder, with the 200+ earthquakes in that region in 1 wk, when that area will ever calm down
considering how bad it was shaken with that 9.0...

hopefully, there won't be much damage from the 6.0+ quakes that hit off the coast.

5. 'years', yeah, that's what I'm hoping doesn't happen. what a mess this caused them, and worst of
all, probably thousands more have perished than what's counted. :( Hoping & praying for the region that it calms down soon.

few dozen really noticeable strong quakes? I'd be crying like that poor young lady in that photo I saw where she's sitting and everything is destroyed around her. Such power this Earth can unleash. The epicenter for the 1.8 was literally right below where I was in CA, and it wasn't very deep, so it jarred the room I was in once real strongly and that was it, but I was like what in the heck was THAT. Many of those who survived those major quakes will be dealing with that for life as each quake happens.

7. I felt that quake that hit Baja California on Easter 2010.
I live in Phoenix and was lying in bed on the second floor. All of a sudden my bed started vibrating. Then the floor started rocking up and down. I thought the garage was caving in and I was going with it. And that was like 500 miles from the epicenter with a much weaker quake than one hit Japan.

I can only imagine what it must have felt like.

8. startling feeling. yeah, as I've read from some of those who survived, they thought they would die.
my heartfelt support & prayers for their country. I am so thankful I only have to deal with an occasional hurricane here in FL.

This chart shows how many noteworthy earthquakes have hit in the world - you can see how that region from AUS to JPN is dealing with so much....

9. 90% of all earthquakes occur along that narrow fault line near Japan.

14. Too amazing to be true..
Most of the world's earthquakes (90%, and 81% of the largest) take place in the 40,000-km-long, horseshoe-shaped zone called the circum-Pacific seismic belt, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, which for the most part bounds the Pacific Plate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake

The Pacific Ring of Fire is not confined to "...that narrow fault line near Japan."

11. I felt that sucker
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 03:25 AM by Art_from_Ark
Sounds like it was about 220 miles away. There was a very gentle undulating motion here, lasting about 25-30 seconds. I was afraid it was going to start shaking harder, but fortunately it petered out.
That makes at least the 10th aftershock today (I lost count after 10).

:hide:

There was yet another aftershock at 18:21 Japan Standard Time. Damn. These things are getting ridiculous!
You could make a drinking game out of this-- take a swig every time an aftershock occurs. Around here, it wouldn't take long to get blitzed.

And yes, I'm far from Ark, so far away...

Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 04:32 AM by Art_from_Ark
(officially occurring at 18:19 JST) originated off the coast of *gack* Fukushima and is rated as a 6.3. Japanese seismic intensity of 3 for this area, but I swear it was really a 4.

Four strong aftershocks within just the last 15 minutes-- aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! And here I thought I was doing well just being woken up once by an aftershock last night.

If there's a Guinness Book of DU Records, you can put me down for "most aftershocks experienced by a DUer" :scared:

At least it seems to have calmed down since this morning
It's now nearly 2:00 in the afternoon, and things seem almost normal.
Of course, the specter of Fukushima Daiichi still lurks 100 miles to the north of here.

24. I was just watching a program about "earthquake sickness"
which has similar symptoms as seasickness, and just as the program was ending that was yet another freakin' earthquake! The epicenter was here in southern Ibaraki. Japanese seismic intensity of 5-lower here, which means there may have been some damage in places.
