We sure have come a long way
We have the most powerful military-industrial complex in the world. When needed, we can kick a little dictator in the ass and take his oil.
Sadly though, our wonderful MIC can't do anything to shut down and clean up a runaway nuclear plant. No. Nobody prepared them for that. Or stopping/cleaning up big giant oil spills. Just wasn't on the table (maybe there wasn't any money in it for anyone).

1. there's no money in cleaning up or helping out
didnt you hear, we dropped 120 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles on Libya the first day of this conflict. Each of those cost $1-1.5 Million dollars (after R&D is figured in). Plus today a plane was shot down, that's another few million right there. Also, once the bombs are dropped, there's nothing left over and they've got to start from scratch and build another. Schools, bridges, and hospitals last for decades, but how great is it to sell a single serving product that needs to be replaced.....Often.

There gonna just give up on those schools and bridges. Seems they didn't make enough money for anyone.
