2. War is justified
to expend the arsenal of ammunition, rockets and bombs thus keeping the military/industrial complex humming while education, health and infrastructure funding among others go begging. Priorities. It's all about priorities. :sarcasm: off

4. Only self defense? Not to stop another Holocaust?

I simply don't get the "only self defense" crowd. So you're willing to use violence but only to protect yourself? If someone was going to kill a child in the street you'd say: "Sorry, this violence isn't directed at me".

Callous.

8. Personal morality and national morality don't always correlate exactly
for instance in the example you give it wouldn't be as simple as "you go and stop the guy about to kill the kid" if we're comparing it to a war.

Instead it would be: you spray bullets in the general direction of the guy who was about to kill the kid, almost certainly killing the guilty part but also likely killing the child and a bunch of other people in the process. Also you get stuck taking care of the families of those injured and rebuilding the block for the next 20+ years.

5. The answer is oil. Oil is the "circumstance" that justifies war. nt

6. Other: Whenever a president feels like it
Dipping poll numbers? War will bring them up. Dog pooped on the Oval Office rug? Let the missiles fly. NCAA bracket not doing so well (thank you, Pittsburgh)? A few sorties will feed pretty pictures of stuff blowing up reel gud for the "news" shows.

I wonder what might have happened today had the fighter jet crew been recovered by Khaddafi's forces instead of friendlies?
