“The No-Fly Zone Has Always Been a Recipe for Disaster”: Jeremy Scahill Says Libyan Strategy Has No Endgame
http://www.democracynow.org/2011/3/22/the_no_fly_zone_has_always

The U.S. and allied air strikes on Libya have entered their fourth day as part of an international effort to enforce a no-fly zone. While the United States is denying it is attempting to assassinate Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi, allied forces bombed his compound for the second night in a row. “In Iraq, resulted in a strengthening of Saddam Hussein’s regime... I think that it could end up backfiring in a tremendous way and keeping Gaddafi in power even longer,” says Jeremy Scahill, Democracy Now! correspondent and independent journalist.

1. And a disaster for us domestically too

U.S. forces fired 110 cruise missiles at Libya on the first day of the war. Each one cost $755,000 to build; $2.8 million to transport, maintain and shoot. Austerity and budget cuts abound; there's no money for NPR or teachers or firefighters. Note to union negotiators: the government has lots of money. They're spending it on war.

2. Unless the "No Fly Zone" is a euphemism for bombing Gaddafy's forces on the ground
and enabling victory for the rebels, then it will be a disaster.

It might be well to remember that the UNSC resolution doesn't JUST authorize a no fly zone. Calling this a No Fly Zone action is a misnomer. Resolution 1973 doesn't give UN imprimatur for regime change in Libya, but the terms justify a full on air assault against all assets of the Gaddafy regime that may threaten the civilian population - and of course ALL of his assets threaten the civilian population.

3. Rubbish!
It effectively contained Saddam Hussein for years and would have continued to do so until he had the decency to kick the bucket.

It was much more cost effective in terms of wealth, destruction, and the loss of life than Stupid's war was.

4. We never actively attempted to assassinate Saddam Hussein
during those years the NFZ was imposed, either.

5. It worked wonderfully in Iraq, until Dubya invaded illegally.
And it is working so far in Libya.

8. USA Has Entered A Civil War Before
Vietnam was a civil war when the USA decided to enter that war -- for "humanitarian reasons".

We all know how that turned out.

The USA should mind its own business, and not try to be the world's policeman.
