3. E-Prime excludes all forms of the verb 'to be'--said to remove personal judgements
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 02:14 PM by hlthe2b
E-Prime (short for English-Prime, sometimes denoted E′ ) is a version of the English language that excludes all forms of the verb to be. Hence, E-Prime allows neither conjugations of to be (am, are, is, was, were, be, been, being), nor archaic forms (e.g. art, wast, wert), nor contractions ('s, 'm, 're).

Some scholars advocate using E-Prime as a device to clarify thinking and strengthen writing.<1> For example, the sentence "the movie was good" could translate into E-Prime as "I liked the movie" or as "the movie made me laugh". The E-Prime versions communicate the speaker's experience rather than judgment, making it harder for the writer or reader to confuse opinion with fact.

4. Fuck E-Prime.
Bastardized English unrecognized by the people who speak the language.

7. With most posts on DU it is readily apparent where the poster stands on a given issue
but I always have difficulty figuring yours out, aquart. This one, for instance. :D

6. You'd do away with "Tripoli was bombed Tuesday." as being judgmental?
Your notions of controlling speech patterns offends me.

This post bears stains of shit... to paraphrase your own speech patterns.

9. Obviously the restrictions overstep their intention.
However, people can create alternate phrasings for the affected ideas.

8. "should be"? -- if you feel so strongly about this, you could at least set a good example
;)
