1. Why don't lead suits exist? Something to shield workers from radiation other than plastic

2. The problem is weight. Alpha emissions are easily shielded
against. Others are not, and the amount of lead required would be far to heavy to be work as clothing. It's a very difficult problem for people who must work in contaminated environments. Very difficult.

3. From what I understand...
In order for such a suit to do much to stop the most lethal radiation, it would have to be so thick and heavy that it would be impossible to move around in.

5. Most of the "radiation" is carried by dust particles.
Plastic is adequate against alpha and beta radiation. Mostly you want to keep these dust particles off your skin and out of your body.

The penetrating gamma radiation from the reactor and the fuel ponds is best shielded by lots of water, concrete and distance. Some of the dust emits gamma radiation too, but there's not much you can do about that. You could hardly walk around in a lead suit that was thick enough to provide significant protection against the gamma radiation. The lead apron you wear at the dentist simply reduces the dose you get from much weaker x-rays yet it's still quite heavy.

6. To build a power-assisted lead suit would be a good idea for these situations. nt
