Libya: Six injured as US team botches rescue of downed airmen

US forces sent into Libya to rescue two downed American airmen botched the mission by shooting and wounding friendly villagers who had come to help, witnesses have said.

Libyans who went to investigate the US warplane's crash site said that a US helicopter had come in with guns firing, creating panic and wounding onlookers, some of whom had to be taken to hospital; one 20-year-old man is expected to have his leg amputated.

...

"We consider that whoever is shot down or a prisoner of war, we should save him and hand him over," he told Hilsum from his hospital bed. "But another plane shot at me and Hamdy, my son. I have shrapnel in my hand."Hospital staff said that Hamdy, aged 20, wa s having an operation to amputate his leg.

"Why did this happen? My car is destroyed, my home is damaged. We would have just picked the second pilot up and put him wherever he wanted in a safe place. Even the other one, we had a celebration for him," Abdul Ati said.

...

Admiral Samuel Locklear, the US commander co-ordinating coalition operations from aboard USS Mount Whitney in the Mediterranean, declined to deny that the marines had opened fire.

You mean walking up to two downed pilots and a burning F-15E in the middle of military actions is a bad idea??

It's horrible it happend, but a) the Libyans asked the world to interevene and b) DON'T GO NEAR DOWN US PLANES!

6. Yes, especially if you are there to help them.

See, the MIC doesn't differentiate between brown skinned people in foreign lands - they are all enemy combatants until the bodies are sorted out. No sarcasm needed.

Survival hint - if you want to avoid being indiscriminately shot by the U.S. forces...hide and don't come out until it is over. Otherwise you will be shot without any provocation.

20. Now that's just sad - you have no compassion.
Now people can't even offer to help?

21. It's more to the fact that
In a time period where enemy combatants no longer wear uniforms, and captured American soldiers are tortured, even beheaded on camera, or just shot dead on sight, I would say "Don't offer to help" and "Keep clear of million dollar planes and their pilots" It's naive of them to just assume they can approach downed pilots and planes and not expect aggressive response, esp. when the reason for the downing of the plane wasn't known at the time.

12. Well, now there's some details I haven't heard stateside
I wonder why we have to go to London to find these things out? And how long will it be before the good people of Libya discover that calling for the intervention of the U.S. military bears a disturbing resemblance to stories about summoning the djinn?

14. 'Botches rescue'? ha ha
Did they rescue the pilots successfully?

Lesson #1 in any Air War

Don't go running up to downed planes with AK-47's in your hands.

With helicopter gunships pointing their sights at you.

You are just ants on the ground.

15. This is a tragic mistake but the rescue team has to operate under ...
.... the thought that anybody coming toward the downed pilots are hostile. Wars
are messy, bloody, and confusing things.

I sure wish the whole thing had not happened and I feel bad about all the collateral damage too.

17. This is how we keep the war on terror going.
If they are not enemies, treat them as such till they are.
