WASHINGTON | Tue Mar 22, 2011 6:49pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The no-fly zone over Libya could end up costing more than $1 billion if the operation drags on more than a couple of months, defense analysts say.

Zack Cooper, a senior analyst at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, said the initial cost of eliminating Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's air defenses was likely to be between $400 million and $800 million.

The expense of patrolling the no-fly zone once it is established is likely to be $30 million to $100 million per week, he said.

The U.S. military has no official cost figures yet for the operation, which has been going on less than a week. By comparison, however, the much more extensive Afghan war costs more than $9 billion per month.

2. I know! Let's cut WIC and heating subsidies some more to pay for it!
Tonight, there will be foie gras, canapes, and sumptuous wines at the White House. The music will be wonderful, and all will be right.

6. $1 Billion - How much is that in teachers?
Guess we better start holding classes in football stadiums. One teacher, 50,000 kids.

And if those kids don't test well...fire that teacher bc no child should be left behind.

12. Then fire policemen and firemen
raise taxes on the poor, cut public transportation - if that fails just close the schools. :sarcasm:

4. yesterday we were doing the math of how much each american would get if the 62 million was divided
equally amongst us..(the 62 million that was spent in one hour sending 110 missiles into libya..ended up not being very much..but hey now, lets divide this billion equally between each and every american and its a different story..

this is such a crock of crap..

Libya: A War We Shouldn't Believe In
by Ted Rall

U.S. forces fired 110 cruise missiles at Libya on the first day of the war. Each one cost $755,000 to build; $2.8 million to transport, maintain and shoot. Austerity and budget cuts abound; there's no money for NPR or teachers or firefighters. Note to union negotiators: the government has lots of money. They're spending it on war.

And that was just our part.

Rec'd for the general point. Oh but we have no money for social programs right?

9. Don't worry about it
When the "opposition" have got control put in the expenses claim . They can pay it back from Libya's $150 billion sovereign fund.

Nothing is free in this world - they should know that and can put it down to the price of freedom.

Simple really.
