Fresno charities may face funding cuts as hunger rises

At the same time a new study ranks Fresno as the nation's hungriest metropolitan area, local charities are worried they won't get their usual allotment of federal dollars to fill the growing need.

United Way in Fresno County, which runs the Federal Emergency Management Agency's food and shelter program at the local level, last year received $1 million, which it spread among Community Food Bank, Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army and Poverello House to provide meals, food boxes or shelter.
A FEMA spokeswoman said the agency cannot issue allocations until its budget, part of the federal budget package, is approved. The House and Senate are working out their proposals for funding the federal government through Sept. 30, and final cuts are to be negotiated.
Community Food Bank director Andy Souza said he heard from officials in Washington, D.C., this week that a 50% cut will be made to the FEMA program. Souza was at the capital serving on a committee for Feeding America, a national organization of food banks.
