Oops -Tokyo Electric nationalisation eyed by some in Japan govt-media

A plan to temporarily nationalise Tokyo Electric Power , the operator of a stricken nuclear plant, has been floated by some members of the Japanese government, the Yomiuri newspaper said on Tuesday.

The plan includes the government taking a majority stake in Asia's largest utility as well as helping it pay for damages stemming from the nuclear accident, the newspaper said, citing unidentified government sources.

The crisis appeared to escalate in the past few days with plutonium found in soil on Tuesday, rattling already shaky financial markets.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said it was not true the government was considering nationalising the utility.

Tokyo Electric spokesman Hajime Motojuku said he was unaware of any plan for nationalisation: "Our first and biggest priority at this moment is to prevent the nuclear power plant accident from worsening further," he said.

7. I don't think that's it at all
My impression is that the Japanese government is as peeved as everyone else at Tepco and is tired of runarounds, "incorrect" data measurements, ad nauseum, so they want to take control of the situation.

4. I think all public utilities should be socialized as a matter of principle.
There's no good reason for private for-profit companies making money off of basic services that everyone needs such as water and energy providers.

It would be easier to regulate them and ensure they are conforming to safety standards too.

5. I'd add internet infrastructure to that.
There's no reason why we can't have a 1st rate internet backbone that is built out and serviced based on a utility model. There's no real customer value in competing private industry infrastructure by doing this, except higher prices and inconsistent service. information is almost as important as water and sewer in keeping our society healthy.
