Christopher Jacome, 17, loved soccer so much his pals took his coffin and brought him to game

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/2011/03/29/2011-03-29_pals_steal_soccer_loving_friends_coffin_from_funeral_take_it_to_game.html

Pals of a teenage soccer fanatic who was murdered in Colombia brought his body to see his favorite team play one last time.

The remains of Christopher Jacome, 17, were brought in a coffin to General Santander Stadium in the city of Cucuta for Sunday's match between Cucuta Deportivo and Envigado.

Jacome, who was a member of a local soccer fan club known for its hooliganism, was shot to death Saturday while playing soccer in a nearby park.

After his wake, pals from his soccer club decided to bring the coffin with the body inside to the stadium and parade the casket around the stands.

City officials were appalled when they later discovered the body was allowed in and are investigating how it happened.

I liked this story. Maybe my friends will rig my coffin with a sail for one last voyage.

2. I don't like this story. After all, it's about a kid being shot to death
while playing soccer. that's more salient than the dumb prank pulled by his friends.

6. I focused more on the fact that he obviously had a number of friends that cared
Unfortunately, kids die all the time. Many without friends or those that care about them or anyone who remembers them.

I thought it was beyond a dumb prank, but a gesture of what he might have wanted.

9. yes, kids die all the time. that doesn't make his murder any less tragic
and I'd bet anything his pals were drunk. It was a stupid disrespectful stunt.

14. So his friends are now drunk and dumb?
Wow. Here I thought I was cynical towards life.

17. uh, they did this after a wake and the club is known for its hooliganism
deduction, my dear Watson. And I didn't say his friends were dumb.

3. You could do the Viking thing...

Most people, when they envision a Viking funeral, think of a hero lying in a boat, pushed out to sea, and the boat set aflame by a well-marked arrow. Within minutes, the boat and the body are burned to ash, symbolizing the Phoenix, where the hero’s spirit rises above the flames to live eternally.

First, this vision is scientifically impossible, as it would take more than a few minutes and a flame hotter than that caused by a quickly burning boat to disintegrate a body. Even in a normal crematory process, temperatures of 760° to 1150°C (1400° to 2100°F) are required for one to two hours to cremate a ‘normal’ body. Larger bodies take longer. the most damage that a few minutes on a burning boat could do is burn the flesh away, revealing bones and muscle tissue.

Further, it has become more difficult and expensive to conduct an ocean funeral — even one that does not include a flaming boat. Most requirements for a full-body burial at sea (not scattering ashes) include a shroud or biodegradable coffin, no embalming — which means the body must be buried at sea as soon as possible — and a toe tag in case the body accidentally washes up on shore one day in the near future. If a biodegradable coffin is used, it usually must be drilled with holes to allow water in and must be weighted with about four-hundredweight of iron chain or concrete to try to keep the coffin from floating in to shore somewhere.

10. I liked the Viking funeral idea
Now I learned it's not practical.

Maybe being dumped in a coffin onto an artifical reef will have to do.
