.... stays in office if the rebels get to demanding he leave, ought we get involved?

If not that, is there any circumstance under which we ought to get involved in Syria?

What about the Congo?
What about Darfur?
What about Somalia?
What about North Korea?
What about . . . . . ?

3. It Goes Like This, Sir
"Your Honor, there are many burglars abroad in the city; even now, as we stand here, houses are being burgled! How can there be any justice in putting me on trial for burglary, while all these others go un-punished? It is only right that you dismiss the charge against me, until such time as every other burglar in the city has been apprehended and placed in the dock alongside me!"

5. Take Your Pick, Sir
Proximity, convenience, expectation of success, how good the pictures look...there are many possible criteria. And no real need to explain or justify, once the thing is in motion. Just how it is.

6. It depends on whether or not we can benefit from such an action. No country
can act solely on humanitarian grounds - and although WE would like to see us swoop in and help all those in need, it won't happen unless the country gets something from it. IMO.
