Dolphin That Jumped In Boat ID'd As Oscar
700-Pound Dolphin ID'd By Pictures Of Dorsal Fin
MARCO ISLAND, Fla. -- Experts in southwest Florida said they have identified the dolphin that jumped in a boat and injured a woman last month.
Naturalists said Monday the bottlenose dolphin weighing between 600 and 700 pounds was identified by pictures of its dorsal fin. It's a male named Oscar that is part of a long-term study of the dolphins around Marco Island.
The identification has allowed the project survey team to determine that Oscar definitely survived his ordeal on March 13. He was first sighted as part of the study five years ago.
A charter boat captain called 911 after the dolphin jumped on the boat on the Marco River and landed on one of his passengers. The woman was not seriously injured.
