Elephants playing in the snow - pics
Smiling elephants... :)

The combo of pictures taken on December 27, 2010 shows an elephant using his trunk to tip snow into his mouth at his enclosure in the Berlin zoo (Zoologischer Garten). Forecasts predict more snow in the German capital, with temperatures staying below zero.

1. Nice! Thank you...
I always wondered which animals do well in the cold/snow in zoos. Seems like elephants aren't too phased.

44. It was Hannibal's own, an Asiatic
Though recent scholarship suggests that they didn't die, it's just that Hannibal turned them around along with the rest of his heavy cavalry because they wouldn't help him in Italy and would cost too much to feed over the alps. (Hasdrubal seems to have "found" a bunch of elephants in Spain, which people suggest were Hannibal's original corps.)

42. Recent Evidence indicates almost no Snow in the Valleys Hannibal probably took
The exact path Hannibal took through the Alps is unknown today, it is clearly in the Alps between modern Day Italy and France NOT Switzerland. Do to Global warming those passes are opening up, and revealing most of them were open in the time of the Roman Republic, only freezing over during the Dark Age Cold period. Thus when people wrote of the act during the life time of Hannibal there just marveled at him getting them over the Mountains NOT through the Snow. It was only when people in the 1700s, during the Mini Ice Age, that snow began to be connected to Hannibal's march and the debate which pass did he take. It now appears it did NOT matter, for all of the passes through the Alps were passable and that explains why the Romans waited for him to go through the Alps before committing forces to defeat Hannibal (i.e. waited on an area he was sure to go through no matter which pass through the alps Hannibal took).

45. Well, also Fabius and Scipio understood how to fight a war
Hannibal hung out in Italy for 8 years, winning every battle he fought, and still couldn't win the country. Hmm.... does that sound familiar....?

Anyone get the humor in Elephant as Republican symbol. Big no's :D

But to be fair, maybe it is boom in the trunk. So not falling for that label trap :D

54. No argument here.
I don't think it's anthropomorphizing, either. Animals are a lot more complex than we have historically given them credit for. They continue to surprise us, and elephants are well known for their intelligence. It's not a stretch at all to think that their features reflect emotion.

I also see it with my cats. I've raised all but one from kittenhood and know them well, and I swear that they smile when they're feeling content and happy. Even my bad boy, Izzy, whose usual "expression" is worried and/or annoyed, will smile when he's getting lap time.

39. Asian Elephants
For some reason I preferred the features and looks of African elephants. Asian elephants have a sickly look to them, the ears are always worn out and the discoloration on the truck, back and ears is just eww.

I just cant get with it
