Mapleton grateful for warning

Rhonda Wiley hunkered down in a storm cellar with seven relatives and friends, reciting the Lord's Prayer and asking her long-dead mother for help.

After the “jet engine” roar above them trailed off to the east, the group climbed out to tree-limb-littered streets they barely recognized. Wiley's daughter's two-story house was covered in mud and dirt and apparently had shifted off its foundation. They had no idea what to do next.

“No one got hurt, that's what counts,” said Wiley. “We all made it out alive.”

A tornado up to three-quarters of a mile wide and with winds in excess of 135 mph cut a 3½-mile path Saturday night that savaged this western Iowa town of 1,200.

It was a pretty little town. Hope they can recover.
