The USS Fort Worth is a littoral or near-shore combat ship like the ones Fincantieri and Lockheed Martin will build. Italian shipbuilder gets Navy contractAssociated Press / December 31, 2010
MILAN — The Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and Lockheed Martin Corp. have won a $4 billion contract to build 10 littoral combat ships for the US Navy by 2015, Fincantieri said.
The vessels will be built at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Wisconsin, with parts such as electrical diesel generators and stabilizer systems being built by the Group’s Systems and Components units.
The innovative ships have three combat modules: surface, mine-hunting, and submarine, Fincantieri said. “The Lockheed Martin team’s Littoral Combat Ship is designed to confront rapidly changing global threats while providing a cost-effective solution in an era of tight budgets,’’ said Lockheed Martin chief executive Bob Stevens. Lockheed is based in Bethesda, Md.
Fincantieri has previously taken orders in the United States for oceanographic research vessels for the University of Fairbanks and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as for vessels for the Coast Guard.
The Italian Foreign Ministry said the order represents “an important injection of faith for this area of Italian industry.’’
