Michele Bachmann revealed: Gore Vidal made her a Republican

A Facebook friend of mine mentioned that he wanted to send Gore Vidal a gift basket. I liked that. :-)

I mean, really. "Burr" was historical fiction. HISTORY. The poor dear really would have gotten the vapors reading "1876"...


Every good conservative icon needs an origin story. The best ones -- the vast majority of them, if you believe them -- are former liberals, "lifelong Democrats," or even former Marxists. They become virulent right-wingers, usually, because of something horrible the Democrats did. Reagan was a Democrat -- and a union leader! -- until, in his formulation, "the party left me." (Around the time the party began supporting civil rights legislation, but that's neither here nor there.) But big events, or supposed betrayals, work best; 9/11 awoke the inner General Turgidson in every supposedly former liberal warblogger.

For Michele Bachmann, it was historical fiction.

In 1960, to end a SAG strike, then-SAG-President Reagan negotiated lowball television that cost thousands actors and actresses residual payments from the film work they did before 1948, money that should have been paid when those films were released to television. Many lesser-known actors and actresses died poor, even indigent because those residuals were denied them.

Reagan resigned the SAG presidency, and soon "turned" Republican and went into politics.

As a SAG member myself, I can tell you he is NOT revered as one of the union's favorite Past Presidents.

Linda Smith, who represented southwest Washington in Congress for one brief term in the 1990s, once told an interviewer that when she was 14, she wanted to get a job to earn money for a cheerleader's uniform. When told that the law did not allow 14-year-olds to get regular jobs, she decided that she "hated government" and had been a die-hard Republican ever since.

That's the mentality we're dealing with.
