Counterfeit solar glasses are flooding the market here in Texas. There is a way to check them out.
Try on the glasses indoors first. NOTHING should be visible through the lenses, and even the brightest lights should only appear very faintly. If furnishings or wall decor are visible through the lenses, these glasses aren’t safe to view the sun.
But if the glasses pass the indoor test, the AAS recommends putting them on outside during a sunny day and looking around. Again, nothing should be visible through the lenses, unless the sun is reflecting off an exceptionally shiny surface, and even then the light will appear faint if the glasses are safe.
If the glasses pass that second test, try looking at the sun through them for less than a second. If the glasses are safe, the sun will appear comfortably bright and likely white, yellow, orange or bluish white.
On the day of the eclipse, stand still and cover your eyes with the glasses or solar viewer before looking up. And never remove the glasses while looking at the sun. For those who wear eyeglasses, wear eclipse glasses on top of them or hold up a handheld viewer in front of them.
And remember to outfit any camera lenses, binoculars or telescopes used to observe the eclipse with the proper solar filters. Never look through an unfiltered optical device of any kind in this situation, even while wearing eclipse glasses.
Optical damage from viewing the sun is painless but the damage is irreversible. Be safe.

Authorities on Monday responded to Donald Trump Jr.’s Florida home after the former president’s son opened an envelope with a suspicious white powder in it.
The news, first reported by the Daily Beast, was confirmed by a person familiar with what transpired.
Hazmat vehicles and fire trucks were spotted outside Trump Jr.’s Jupiter, Florida, home, which he shares with his fiancée, former Fox News personality Kimberly Guilfoyle.
The initial test results on the substance were inconclusive, the person said, though authorities don’t believe the powder is deadly. The person added that Trump Jr.’s life is not in jeopardy.

Las Vegas police on Wednesday said there appear to be multiple victims in a shooting on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Police said the suspect was dead.

Passengers and others went about packing their bags that they would never open. Slept in their own beds with their loved ones. First responders thought it was going to be an ordinary day.
I was working for American Airlines as a flight attendant at the time. I spent the day before flying in/out of NYC, and was on a runway in LA racing down the runway when the pilot stopped dead cold on the runway. He called me up and told me the FAA had grounded us. Didn’t know why.
(I suspect he did )Just so happened that the Pres Crandall of AA’s secretary was flying first class and waved me over to tell me about a ‘hijacking’. When we returned to the gate we were just learning it about from passengers. I was dragging my bag into the terminal when I saw people clustered around the TV’s. It’s putting it mildly to say I was nerved wrecked for days. My sister came and got me (she lived nearby) and it took me 11 days to get home from there.
