Washington (CNN)The winner of the Alabama special election, Democratic Senator-elect Doug Jones, says it's time to move on from the sexual misconduct allegations that have been made against President Donald Trump.
Jones told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" Sunday morning that he doesn't agree with some in his party who say Trump should resign from office over the sexual harassment and sexual assault allegations against him, which Trump has denied.
" T)hose allegations were made before the election, and so people had an opportunity to judge before that election," Jones said.
Jones also said that he's ready to move forward despite Roy Moore's refusal to concede the race, stating he's "ready to go regardless of whether (Moore) concedes or not."
"I say it's time to move on. Alabama has spoken," Jones added. "It was a close election, there is no question about that. But, you know, elections can be close sometimes. But now it's time to heal."

(108,980 posts)What matters is Doug Jones's voting record, once he has a chance to vote.
And then we should recognize that he's in ALABAMA, so there's no chance in hell he'll satisfy the purists here on DU. But we're infinitely better off with a DINO in a red state than a right wing Republican.

(4,377 posts)It's obvious he's trying to build support from GOP voters with this crap, but its a waste of damn time. Either he acts and votes like a Dem, or else there was no point winning AL in the first place. It's not about being a purist, its about recognizing that he only won because the pukes had Roy Moore. We're talking about Alabama for gods sake, they ran a child molesting, extremist theocrat who is widely disliked in the state and STILL only lost by a couple of points.

(94,598 posts)...it equates to representing the needs of the people in Alabama in a Democratic context: protecting SS and Medicare; encouraging economic investment; protecting healthcare options.

(4,377 posts)That's why I said I hope his recent attempts to sway Alabama voters doesn't cross over into his voting. Because last I checked the majority in Alabama aren't massive fans of the party that vote for protecting SS and Medicare; encouraging economic investment and protecting healthcare options. Perhaps they can be convinced when they see the real effects, but it would likely improve Jones chances of re-elecction if he voted against things we hold dear (not that anything is going to get him re-elected anyway).

Doug Jones knows exactly what he's saying here. It feeds the electorate that he needs for 2018 while keeping an unpopular figure at the head of the GOP. The man's clever, he managed to win in a state that wouldn't normally vote for a Democratic candidate.
Let him play the fishing line as he needs to, to reel in the big one, which is re-election.

(4,377 posts)He's not going to get re-elected, this crap is a waste of everyones time. He needs to use the next 2 years for positive change not a pointless and doomed re-election race.

(4,377 posts)And I think we're definitely going to see a blue wave across the country, but I can't see it in Alabama. I'm a big fan of trying to fight everywhere (I think we should ALWAYS fight 50 state), but I just don't think its worth sacrificing the unexpected gift we've been given on a shot quite that long. Fight Alabama in 2020 certainly, but Doug Jones needs to be a Democrat for the next 2 years, not a Republican in a blue tie.

(4,377 posts)Just getting a bit tired of the couple of public statements he's put out this week. It's clear what he's doing and it just concerns me that it might bleed over into his voting intentions. Will be very happy to be proven wrong though.

(15,512 posts)And as a strategy it's backfired twice, Conyers and Franken, and done zero damage to Trump or any other con. Meanwhile Trump has gotten his tax scam nearly passed. As strategies go this isn't the greatest.

(30,813 posts)It's always good to imagine the shoe being on the other foot. It's pretty likely Republicans would have been pulling every trick to get Clinton out, had she been elected. That would include continued rehash of the email "controversy", as well as constant droning about her involvement in Bill's sins. Surely, as the drumbeat quickened, there would have been GOP calls for her to resign.

(108,980 posts)that. He was the choice of a minority of voters.
Almost 2.9 million Hillary voters were disenfranchised, because our votes counted for nothing in the Electoral College.

He should be impeached (or be called upon to resign) over things the voters didn't know: Russian collusion, impending dementia, and personality disorders that are so severe that they put our nation in peril on a daily basis.

Bigger issue is how could they do that knowing what he was. What is wrong with people?

(70,711 posts)First, he has been fighting to be a Dem in a wingnut state all his life. Then, he went through through a campaign dealing with Deplorables to the max. On the Sunday yak shows he was peppered with questions (more like DEMANDS and EXPECTATIONS) about whether he will "work with" or "meet half way" with Repukes and with "issues" of the national Yak circuses.
He was, like, I'm being bombarded here, don't even have the chance to get a little rest, have a little honeymoon, take a breath.

(30,481 posts)I've noticed a clear effort to discredit Jones over the smallest of bullshit.
We have a Dem as a Senator in Alabama and a bunch of purity assholes claiming to be on the "left" are going to attack him.
Don't worry, Sessions will be welcomed back to his seat by winning 70% of the vote in a couple of years, all while a bunch of trash on the "left" go after every single word Jones speaks.
