I would say they look as if an essential biological element was missing...

You know that stuff which like a sponge ?

rotting faces. But Velasquez in this magnificent painting, Las Meninas (the maidens) shows the rot starting.

That painting is a mystery. We just don't know what he was thinking with this "painting within a painting" (Manet did this too).
