The Palin's are not trash.

I keep seeing the same sentiments repeated on DU constantly. Just because her son has mental problems doesn't make them trash.

Other things that brood does surely makes them trashy, but not a mentally ill child.

It's because of the way the entire family is. It's because who Sarah is and/or pretends to be.

You're correct, mental illness does not make one "trash" or your family "trash".

or do they have too much money for that particular epithet?

The thing I don't like about the "trash" designation, is that it almost always contains an ugly socio-economic element i.e. "poor white trash" -- It reeks of elitism.

I say that based on moral grounds, legal grounds, and just plain tackiness in some instances. Ivanka hawking her wares using the government ? That's just tacky, as well as illegal and immoral.

eta: You'll never heard me utter the phrase "white trash" or "poor white trash" on DU or anywhere. Anyone can act "trashily", including the billionaires. You can have class and manners no matter how poor you are.

He and that whole family can be wiped out by an asteroid tomorrow and it won't make a damn's worth of difference in this world. In fact, it would improve this planet!

... nope, I just simply can't stand a family of grifters, liars, hypocrites and criminals who blame everyone else for their problems (somehow Obama is at fault for Sarah's POS son having PTSD? Somehow liberals are at fault for Bristol's failure to stick to abstinence?).

Not only do I not feel sorry in the least for any of the foul karma these disgusting people have earned, they need to get out of the news and stay out of it.

You know what Sarah Palin would say if that was your son who got called 911 on? "SEE! Those liberals are all crazy and violent! They need to be locked up for their own good!" and she'd do it expecting to be paid to go on the lecture circuit for her oh-so-wise "views."

Now you may run along and feel sorry for someone else. Your diagnosis is nearly as laughable as your breathless public would-be piety. Far too many of you "Hey, you - FOR SHAME! SHAME for not being like me! OOOH! Look at me, everyone! I am SO TOO a good person!" types around here.

of the patients on my daughter's mental health ward there for underlying addictions?

I think it is a continuum. In one sense there is no "normal". I come from a family of alcoholics - I think part of it is a historical coping mechanism. Neither my wire nor I drink, but we both have our own issues that could be considered mental health as well.

My oldest child was also put in a mental health ward. For her it was the wrong thing to do and she found no help for her problems there. She went right back to drinking shortly after each stay. As an adult today, she will tell you the same. Mental health treatment only helped her hide her actual problem, alcoholism. She would come out of treatment and shortly after would relapse once again.

AA saved her life. She found a sponsor who was the right person for her. She studied her program, attended her meetings and stayed in close touch with her sponsor. My husband & I joined Al-anon, got our sponsors. went to our meetings and worked our program.

That's my story and I just thought I'd share.

PS: That's not to say that some people may not have both a mental problem & an addiction problem. But they are not one in the same.

The two are hardly mutually exclusive.

The Palins enjoy power, privilege and influence beyond what 99.99% of the population will ever get to enjoy, and they squander it in an ongoing debauch of public clown-fuckery.

They deserve no sympathy, and I regret only that I am unable to effectively mock them to the level of cruelty that they have earned.

Sarah is always so quick to point fingers and judge other people but everyone is supposed to respect her family's problems.

At any rate, I honestly hope that Track doesn't end up dead. (I had a little dark joke to myself when my own young adult son died: I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy... Sarah Palin.)

I think a lot of the public animosity comes from the Palin kids seeming to skate by when they break the law. Or Sarah getting away with shady stuff.

I hope that Track gets treatment and not another round through a special veteran's court where he has to sit through some classes and they just rubber stamp him "All Better Now", especially for the sake of his children.

And since children are often a product of their environments and then the older ones got dragged into the public spotlight, it's not entirely their fault they turned out the way they did.

And if they weren't the children of politicians we wouldn't be talking about them.

But for a group of people that preach family values, it's worthy of discussion simply because "By their fruits ye shall know them" is another bit of their dogma. And actually one of the few that's logical.

I have PTSD, and the only time I might assault someone is if they woke me up the wrong way, until I realized I wasn't being attacked again. And then I would apologize profusely and get them medical attention if I'd done actual damage.

While drug and alcohol abuse are illnesses and deserving of treatment, they don't negate criminal responsibility for actions undertaken while intoxicated.

....

And welcome to DU!
