Jamie Stewart voted for Donald Trump, but she thinks the president is a jackass. She doesnt really love to talk about what hes doing or why she voted for him.
They should take his phone away from him, she says. He posts stupid shit all the time.
In a series of interviews that stretched over a year, Stewart was ambivalent when pressed about the presidents accomplishments or any promises he might have kept. I dont really pay attention, she says. I dont have time to give a shit.
Since Trump astonished himself and the world on election night last year, observers have scrambled to figure out people like Stewart, Middle Americas white working class. Why did they vote as they did? And were they going to do it again?

(37,457 posts)So she can't look at her phone on a work break ? While chilling in front of the mindless TV stuff ? It takes a minute to scan headlines and read the really important stuff. At least do that much.
You can tailor Google news search so you can get the topics you really want. It works great, not perfectly, but great.
not fooled
(5,801 posts)that it takes a lot less time to stay informed than to suffer under GOPee policy.
Just one example: students who don't think politics matters and then spend decades paying off student loans. Those loans didn't fall from the sky or weren't an act of dog, they exist because of specific policy decisions made by politicians.
And anyone who doesn't understand what is happening in this country and why and who tunes out politics is a bad American and has no right to fly the flag, swagger around proclaiming how great this country is, etc. etc. etc.
Ignorant dumbasses together with venal politicians got us in this mess.
Voters can get us out of it, e.g. the black women who were instrumental in electing Doug Jones.

So seeing them pretend to give a shit about the state of affairs now rings a bit hollow.

Today, she doesnt regret her decision, nor does she try to justify it or apologize for it. It just seemed like the
best choice, she says. Better than Hillary, thats what everybody was saying, so thats what we went with. A
lot of my family was just like, put anybody in that office other than that bitch.

I dont want a bunch of backlash online of people calling me just an ignorant, racist, redneck. Im a quiet, small-town girl.

We were raised as you dont mix races. You know what I mean? said Stewart. White peoples with white people. Black peoples with black people. Thats how I was raised. And still to this day, if me and Dozer werent together and Id date a black guy, my family would disown me.

Dems should make sure that all the votes are counted and that people have the right to vote too but don't spend one
minute trying to get these people's votes. They are gone. Only after the dems take back power and work for the common
good will some of there people vote blue but many are gone for good.

(7,947 posts)I agree. They are so reactive and resentful (I know many of these as I grew up around there), and if you treat them well, they manage to see that as "elitism". They think trying to make it possible for them and their kids to get a good education means "you think I'm stupid?"
Trump knows exactly how to manipulate them, and it's actually about treating them with contempt. We're not going to do that, and we're not going to do his patented "I'm with you, which is why I'm cutting taxes for ME" lying routine.
The best thing that can happen to them is to be defeated so that they get the Democratic programs and the help that they can then hate and resent.
I'm really tired of them and their resentment. Resentment is the worst motivation of all-- completely counter-productive- so they should not be treated as if they are rational actors. And I don't care if that sounds "patronizing". Everything sounds patronizing to them.
And I remind myself that most of Trump's voters are just the "Always vote GOP" types who are also pretty unreachable, if considerably more rational.

(182,829 posts)The main factor was him being on the air - full speeches and often "pre-game" coverage - constantly. Want a simple comparison? Snuggles a few years ago. Headshaking bad commercials but they were everywhere. Priced perfectly for joke/gift exchanges at work, they sold tons of them. Where I worked at the time there were about 50 employees and 5 Snuggies showed up at the gift exchange. That's 10% coverage.

they will remain idiot racist fuckheads.
I am greatly confident that all of these allegedly remorseful Trump voters--who were either too stupid or too willfully ignorant to see what was obvious to everyone--will nevertheless find some way to pull the Red lever in 2018 and 2020.
Let me hear that they have renounced their stupidity and learned from it. Otherwise they don't regret their stupid Trump vote; they regret being called out for their stupidity.
