I was a draft bait teen back in 1968 when he first ran, and never knew that.
I'm finally watching Ken Burns' excellent Vietnam doc and in episode seven he outlined how candidate Richard Nixon was on the phone with South Vietnam telling them to boycott Johnson's peace talks because he (Nixon) would offer the South a better deal than his opponent Hubert Humphrey after the election, and it worked. South Vietnam refused to negotiate with the North.
President Johnson, who announced his stepping down months earlier, knew this because he had the S Vietnam embassy bugged and heard first hand as Nixon staffers worked the deal. Audio tapes played on the series revealed that after appearing on Meet The Press Nixon called the White House to offer full support for the peace talks and to convince LBJ that he would never do anything to sabotage the peace process. "Believe me" he said on the tape, "there's nothing to the rumors".
Johnson wanted so bad to press congress for treason charges but felt he couldn't reveal how he came by this information, so it went the wayside.
*Nixon sabotaged peace talks while at that time 35,000 Americans had died in Vietnam. 15,000 more would die in the years after Nixon won the election.
*Candidate Reagan cut a deal with Iran to hold 400 hostages until after he was elected. He then worked secretly to supply arms to the enemy state.
*Is it any surprise Trump worked with a sworn enemy to undermine democracy itself? It's in the party playbook.
Why do republicans hate America?

Bottom line: The repugs haven't won an election legitimately since Eisenhower in the '50s, maybe Daddy Bush if you don't consider his election just and extention of Reagan's admin.

(70,516 posts)The story has it H.W. Bush went to Paris in 1980 and told the Iranians not to
go through w/the deal they had w/Carter to release the hostages.
Nixon talked to both the North and South Vietnamese and told them they
would get a better deal from him then the one on the table they had w/LBJ.
We haven't had a legit GOP President since Ike.

(2,654 posts)prolonging a useless war. A timely Vietnam peace settlement would have, in all likely hood, elected Humphrey in 1968 and ended Nixon's political career so he sabotaged it for his own selfish political aspirations, pure evil.

(6,115 posts)We did not have available the proof in the form if the recordings of LBJ, et al that were released much later. But we in the anti war effort and in the press did have enough to know that Nixon was meddling in the Paris peace talks in 1968. It was strongly suspected in 1968 and widely documented by 1972. But most of the public thought we were crazy commie pinko PREverts, cowards who hated America.

(18,636 posts)It seems like every republican president since I was a kid in the '60s should rightly have served time in Leavenworth, yet somehow they manage to sway public opinion that it's the democrats that should be "locked up".
From Clinton to Obama they claim high treason while they collude with enemies of the state for political gain. What the fuck is wrong with republican voters.
