Sowing public doubt about the special counsel's Russia investigation can give the president cover for pardons, even if the investigation is allowed to proceed.

President Donald Trump insists hes not going to fire Robert Mueller, but thats not stopping Republicans and others close to the president from orchestrating a relentless stream of attacks on the credibility and integrity of the special counsel and his team of Russia investigators.
In the past week, investigators on Muellers team have been publicly accused of bias against Trump and of violating criminal procedure to get documents related to his transition. The purpose of the onslaught, according to people close to the White House, isnt to encourage the president to oust the special counsel, a move that could precipitate a crisis in the Justice Department and potentially a move to impeach Trump.
Rather, these people said, the goal is to sow public doubt about Mueller and his prosecutors in advance of upcoming criminal trials and to give the president political cover if he wants to start issuing pardons to any current or former aides swept up in the Russia scandal.
It is definitely a smarter strategy than outright firing of Mueller, because that is likely to create a firestorm, said Elizabeth de la Vega, a former assistant U.S. attorney from the Northern District of California. It is also entirely consistent with Trumps modus operandi because he is surprisingly nonconfrontational, preferring to be manipulative and, frankly, sneaky.

Lots of interesting stories in there. The press will love it.
So Trump has to choose between bad press that will make it difficult for him to govern if he grants pardons or the actual trials themselves which will also result in bad press.
The trials will take longer, so he will probably choose that route. He will not be able to hide the truth. All the disgusting facts will eke out one way or the other.

(17,984 posts)A few leaks couldn't hurt now. If the MSM had some juicy tidbits to analyze while Faux is spewing garbage, maybe it would hurt the tRump allies' narrative.
