(30,481 posts)Literally. The chances of him not being able to legitimately claim he is being audited are slim to none. It doesn't matter in any way about any thing.

(11,738 posts)The IRS stated way back that the presence of an audit was not a reason why he could not release his tax returns.
Trump simply does not want to release them because he knows that they will receive the scrutiny they deserve and will bring out very unpleasant, likely embarrassing, and possibly incriminating information about his finances and financial ties.
It is likely that Mueller has them, but is likely not to put them out until the investigation is completed. Mueller appears to be acting in a very shrewd and above board manner regarding the investigation and releasing such salacious (even if materially important) information might taint the investigation.
Remember that Watergate took almost 2 years and Whitewater was going on for almost 4.
