Antivenin, lots of love save Tavares dog after snake bite
TAVARES Cali, a Labrador/Shar-Pei mix, looked like a manatee when she was admitted into the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital with a potentially deadly snake bite.
The 3-year-old dog puffed up dramatically due to a reaction from being bitten by what was likely an Eastern diamondback rattler, the largest venomous snake on the continent, and had to fight for her life. When she finally arrived home after two weeks in intensive care and multiple surgeries, a tongue-wagging Cali bounced out of the back of the family's SUV and immediately began sniffing around familiar territory.
"She's ready to go exploring again," said Connie Schmitt, 45, as she snapped pictures of Friday's homecoming. It was a special moment for Schmitt; her husband, Mike; and their four boys at home, who weren't sure their first dog would survive.
"A lot of doctors didn't think she was going to make it," said Michael Schmitt, 15. "She's been a really cool, awesome dog. She's part of the family, you know."

(32,086 posts)My old boss lives on a pond out in the country. She raises beagles, and has to deal with at least 3 or 4 snake bites every summer. Mostly cottonmouths, but an occasional rattlesnake bite. One of them was nailed twice already this summer. No fatalities in the 15 or so years they've lived out there. Granted, we don't get Eastern diamondbacks here, although we do get a subspecies, the canebrake rattlesnake, and they don't reach quite the size of the Easterns. The largest I have ever seen was 5-footer, which could do some major damage. Eastern diamondbacks can get well over 6 ft., I could see one of those being lethal to a dog and to a human.

(51,666 posts)I had a client whose dog got an annual snakebite. The first time it was severe; the second time it was moderate; the third time it was mild. The bites were building up his immune response to the venom.
Now they have a vaccine to do that.
