A new CNN poll finds that 56% of voters say they favor a Democrat in their congressional district, while 38% prefer a Republican.

“That 18-point edge is the widest Democrats have held in CNN polling on the 2018 contests, and the largest at this point in midterm election cycles dating back two decades.”

I'm optimistic. Midterm elections have not been kind to presidents or their parties. Since 1862, there have been 36 midterm elections held during the first or second terms of an administration. In 33 of those 36 elections, the opposition party gained strength in the House.

Ad to that the 18-point lead coming into the mid-term season, the consistently low approval ratings Trump holds, and the ability to tie each GOP member of congress to Trump, it's possible the Democrats could win the 24 seats necessary to hold a majority in the House.

It's not unlikely-- win the GOP districts Clinton won, capitalize on retirements (twice as many GOP will be retiring), and target the races that were the closest last time around.

Though historically, it would take one of the bigger waves since 1976. The party out of the White House has picked up 24-plus seats in only four of the past 10 midterm elections.
