Pope Francis called for Israel and Palestine to be separate, independent countries, and for the world to take better care of millions of migrants driven from their landtwo subtle hits at President Donald Trump in the Holy Father's annual Christmas address.
Speaking in St. Peters Square in Rome, the Pope indirectly addressed Trumps decision last week to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a controversial move that manyincluding the more than 120 nations that backed a U.N. resolution on Thursdaybelieve will undermine the so-called "two-state solution."
The Pope implored his Catholic followers to consider the children who continue to suffer because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.
Palestinians, who hope that Jerusalem will be the capital of their future state were enraged by Trump's move, with protesters burning American flags and clashing with Israeli soldiers. More than 100 were injured during protests on Thursday as Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian militant group, urged followers to launch a third uprising against Israel.
Let us pray that the will to resume dialogue may prevail between the parties and that a negotiated solution can finally be reached, one that would allow the peaceful coexistence of two states within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders, said Pope Francis on Monday morning in the Vatican.
