By Avery Anapol - 12/25/17 08:04 PM EST
Utah's largest newspaper slammed Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah) in a Christmas Day editorial on Monday while calling on the senior GOP senator to retire.
The Salt Lake Tribunes editorial board named Hatch their 2017 Utahn of the Year, a designation the paper says is given to someone who has had the biggest impact. For good or for ill.
The newspaper said Hatch earned the title based on his utter lack of integrity that rises from his unquenchable thirst for power.
It would be good for Utah if Hatch, having finally caught the Great White Whale of tax reform, were to call it a career, the Tribune's editorial board wrote. If he doesnt, the voters should end it for him.
The Tribune went after Hatch for his involvement in President Trumps decision earlier this year to shrink two national monuments in the state, saying there was no constitutional, legal or environmental logic" behind the move.
To all appearances appearances promoted by Hatch this anti-environmental, anti-Native American and, yes, anti-business decommissioning of national monuments was basically a political favor the White House did for Hatch, the editorial states.
The Tribune also noted Hatchs involvement in the passage of the GOP tax plan last week. The plan has been criticized by opponents who say it primarily benefits wealthy individuals and corporations, claims that backers of the plan reject.
The editorial criticizes Hatch for saying in 2012 that it would be his last campaign, but now appears to be preparing to run again in 2018, which would be his 8th term.
Thats not only not fair to all of those who were passed over. It is basically a theft from the Utah electorate.
The Hill reached out to a spokesman for Hatch for comment.
Rumors have swirled that Hatch could retire to make room for 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to run for his Senate seat, but Hatchs office has denied the reports.
A poll from earlier this year found that three-quarters of Utahns want Hatch to retire.

It's owned by the Huntsman family now which worries me. I feel it'll move further to the right.

(14,494 posts)if someone (maybe at Heritage Foundation or the Koch mob) has a secret dossier on all these old farts. Something like "Mr. Hatch, do you remember that secretary you had back in the 60s? We had a little chat with her and.....".
These old guys do not want their legacy destroyed and will do anything or vote for anything to protect it until they retire.

(115,786 posts)besides being disgusting, doesn't make sense unless they decided that's what they have to do, or else Trump has something on them. Maybe he does, considering that the Russians also seemed to have hacked the RNC, and maybe they found some dirt they gave their puppet, Trump (for a price, of course).
What's especially interesting is the fact that none of these GOPers ever fawned over any other GOP president like that, not even their saint, Ronald Reagan. They ardently defended even the worst policies of Reagan, Bush I and Bush II, but they never kissed up to any of them in public like they did with Trump - as if they were groveling before somebody like Louis XIV. So why is Trump different?

(985 posts)Claiming that a passage in the book about a pubic hair on a soda can was proof that Anita Hill was lying and had gotten the idea for that part of her testimony there. I wondered if Clarence had tipped him off that that's where he'd gotten the idea.
It's outrageous that this fossilized douchebag has been there for 40 years and Al Franken is forced to leave over bullshit.

(12,448 posts)They called him "Utahn of the Year" so he was thrilled. The paper uses that title, like Time's Person of the Year, to highlight someone or group who did something significant, good or bad. In Hatch's case, it was bad--very bad. But Hatch apparently only saw the title and didn't read the damning article.

He's so like Trump, who thought the same thing about Time's Person of the Year.
