(23,334 posts)up here in Big Sky Country...which is normal, and expected. I must say, I am losing my enthusiasm for it the older I get. It's no fun shoveling it from one place to another. The dogs love it, however. Chickens hate it.

(24,324 posts)I am near rochester.. We do get some lake effect snow ( which, contrary to popular belief, is the exact same stuff as snow snow.
And between roch and BUFF is BATAVIA where there is often a band of lake effect snow.. then sometimes before and after that 5-8 mile stretch.. nothin.'

(26,286 posts)Actually, the winters of 2013 - 2015 were brutal. Not Erie brutal, but still.
Right now we are going through a bad cold snap, but I'll take that over heavy snow, any day.

(1,336 posts)where lake effect snow is a strong possibility every winter, it's important to remind ourselves how grateful we should be to the Great Lakes the rest of the year -- and to the bordering states and provinces (like mine) who recognize their incredible value.
Still -- 6 feet of snow in the space of 48 hours is f'ing ridiculous!
matt819
(10,749 posts)And we get some serious snow now and then. In the past 15 years Id say the worst one-day was about 3 feet.

And, of course, that's where all the cops are keeping warm, waiting for the thaw.

(4,031 posts)...let me know how that works out.
As far as tracks go, when the snow is falling at >1-ft/hour, they'd have to be right behind you or lose your trail.
So, check the weather and hit the job in the middle of the storm, not at the end.

(24,324 posts)That oughta do it..
And BTW, I was in Florida, NAPLES, for 1 day Dec 9, my ONLY time ever in the state.(well, except for once in Tallahhasseehhssee, but that's really Alabamama) and it rained and was cold, like 40-55... What's up with that???
I mean, I come there one time in my life and it freakin rains and freezes my ass off.
And I couldn;t find the gulf of Mexico. I walked and walked, followed the path that said THIS WAY.. Finally had to turn around and go back to my car to drive to Ft Myers for a flight back to upstate NY.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,372 posts)TWO ACCEPTED METHODS;
1) Wait till late in the day, around tea time, and walk in the general direction of the sun. When your feet get wet, you're there.
2) Take I 75 down through Leatherheads, take the M5 Motorway toward Brighton, left at the rock that looks like a turtle and then ask.
Oh....BTW, the sign that said "This way" didn't also say, in very small letters,
To The Nude Beach", did it?
As far as the temp during your visit...yeah, that was the only day in the last 375 years it was like that.
Sorry.

By Tim Craig December 26 at 10:51 AM
Lake-effect snow buried Pennsylvanias fourth largest city under more than four feet of snow over Christmas, smashing both local and state snowfall records while hampering holiday travel around the Great Lakes.
With snow falling at a rate of up to three inches per hour, the National Weather Service reported Erie, Pa., picked up 53 inches in a 30-hour period ending Tuesday morning.
Erie officials have declared a state of emergency and are pleading with motorists to stay off city streets and nearby highways, including Interstates 90 and 79.

(4,750 posts)Just got back from a holiday visit to Buffalo. There was snow, but nothing like what was pictured. It was very beautiful, actually, with tree branches "frosted" with an inch or two of snow. We had an entire day of lovely, gently falling snow.
