My nephew joined the Navy and is starting Boot Camp next month.
I did 30 years in the Navy and retired as a "Mustang Officer" recently, so since he was down visiting, I thought I'd take him to the base for some tours of the airfield and some of the Aircraft Carriers that were in port.
I mentioned that the CVN's are named after Presidents and other significant American folks in Naval History, like the USS CARL VINSON and USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
My nephew asked me if I thought we'd ever have a USS TRUMP? He's a great kid, and definitely NOT a Trumpanzee, but the question hit me in the stomach like a blow from George Foreman. I think I actually threw up in my mouth a little bit too.
As much as I hate the Orange Shitgibbon and his Retrumplican Party...
As much as I suffer from Donnie Short Fingers Tourette's syndrome every time I hear his name, or see some news story about him...
As much as I've dedicated what little help I can provide to ensure we elect Democrats in a Blue Wave in 2018....
It was this question from my nephew that drove home the point of what we have done.
This question made this whole nightmare finally seem "real".
This fucking country elected this cretin to the most prestigious office in the world. An office we honor by naming proud warships after its' occupants.
Throughout the first year of this monstrosity of an administration, I've never felt lower, more dejected, more saddened and hopeless than I did at that moment.
Just knowing that this worthless sack of orange colored bile, this morally bankrupt charlatan, this "thing" that possesses absolutely no redeeming qualities, now sits in an office we once held in high esteem makes my hair hurt!
What have we done America?

(12,665 posts)And I'm certainly not beyond name-calling when name-calling is warranted.
This "worship" of the position of President as the CiC is both recent, ridiculous and dangerous.
The only President that I ever remember not being referred to by a string of toasty epithets by the enlisted and officers for the political garbage he sacrificed troops for was President Carter, and even then , there were a few of the older guys had problems with his push to integrate the armed services further by making racial and sexual harassment/discrimination an actionable offense under the UCMJ.
Yes, we're supposed to "respect the rank". But we don't have to - and never had to - respect the person. Just as we don't have to follow unlawful orders.
You don't want to know how many REMFs, Buttercups, and outright Ass-leavings I had to deal with. And a few of them, I called them out to their faces without repercussion - with all due respect, of course. You just need to be tactically tactful; know when you can say something and who your audience is.

(10,224 posts)They used to name carriers after famous warships of the past; Enterprise, Wasp, Hornet and famous battles; Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga. When did it become ok to name these after politicians. Never mind I know; FDR.
