The Trump administration is reportedly rolling back the use of fines against nursing homes that have been cited for violations such as neglect or mistreatment.
The move comes after the nursing home industry requested the change in the Medicare program's penalty protocols, The New York Times reported over the holiday weekend.
The American Health Care Association had argued that inspectors were too focused on finding wrongdoings at nursing homes instead of assisting the facilities.
It is critical that we have relief, Mark Parkinson, the groups president, wrote in a letter to Donald Trump, then president-elect, in December 2016.

IMO, this act will hurt residents. I'd like to read the nyt article but can't.

(10,029 posts)I am assuming nursing facilities will now be giving their inadequately paid and often barely qualified and overworked high turn over rate no benefits staff one time bonuses because of this rule change?
Nah.

Senior Living is a totally corrupt business. Not the caregivers, mind you.
But the crooks behind the scenes. All I can say is watch out and
don't sign anything without expert legal help.

(12,663 posts)Just last year, when one was cited to be shut down for violations, everyone on the staff but the skeleton crew including a cook and a janitor were told by the owners to leave because "the county will take over" - leaving the 14 residents bed bound with whatever medicines and food were left.
The county wasn't ready because the company was supposed to provide a plan to turn the site and records over to the state within a reasonable amount of time, instead of just pulling out and dumping the site.

Who knows how many other facilities like that just dump patients or sites whenever it becomes inconvenient or there's a "black mark" on their record because of difficult patients they're supposed to be caring for.
