My son, who was four, was sitting in the kitchen, eating a graham cracker and talking to me. His 14 month old sister came toddling in. She saw his graham cracker, started crying and reaching for it. She was genuinely distressed that he had the graham cracker and she did not.

My son gave me a look of pure bewilderment. His look also said, "I didn't do anything. I was not teasing her or taking anything from her."

I told my son that he was fine. I told him that babies were selfish. They thought everything belonged to them. They didn't know how to share yet. I gave his sister a graham cracker, and she sat down, satisfied.

My son kept saying, "Aren't babies selfish, mommy? Babies are so selfish."

So are republicans. And they are not nearly as cute.
