Sitting at the car repair shop.

I will just barely be able to pay for the suspension work but I do have enough. Young man just came in whose tires are in really bad shape. He has no money to replace them and was hoping to go to Long Island to see family. Shop says they are definitely not safe enough. Man do I wish I could gift him a set of tires! That for me would be the joy of being wealthy. All I can do is send loving thoughts his way.

that are not safe because the money must go to other places like food and shelter. Welcome to the American the repugs want for their serfs.

Do they have tread?. Measure the depth across the face of the tire. Inside edge wear & "cupping" or odd wear patter indicates a alignment issue that should be addressed.

Use a penny-if the tread doesn't reach Abe's forehead it is low. Safe? your call but due.

Are there bald spots? Bad but maybe not death defying-very poor safety traction etc...

See chords of white thread or very sharp metal wire showing anywhere at all?-PARK IT. Use backroads to get to the tire shop or tow it.

Show him this if you can-sales people hate helpful people.

I like this repair shop, decent people. If they said the tires are bad, they are.

I used to see used tires going for around 25-30 bucks each. You may not find a matching set, but if I needed them and couldn't afford new, then I wouldn't care.
